Work in the Real World 2011

              Sauk Valley Event:

The annual Career Conference, “Work in the Real World”, was held on November 4 at Sauk Valley Community College.  This year’s event was, again, hugely successful according to the evaluations that were received from employers, teachers and students.  Over 175 students learned about careers within the Nursing, Allied Health, Education, Social Work, Criminal Justice, Business, Transportation, Distribution, Mechanics, Trades and Agriculture industries.

There were 45 employers who presented information about hiring requirements, needed work skills and careers.  Workshops were offered on choosing a career, job interviewing and preparing for college and an employer panel consisting of a representative from different industries talked to students about importance of attendance and attitude.  The conference is organized in partnership with BEST Inc., Partners for Employment, Sauk Valley Community College and Whiteside Area Career Center.

             LaSalle/Putnam/Bureau Event:

The annual event was held on Wednesday, November 15th.  This year the event consisted of two groups; one from the Area Vocational Center(AVC) at L/P High School and one from Hall High School.  Thirty-nine students from each school participated in tours of local manufacturing and logistics companies.

Hall High School students toured James Hardie Building Products in Peru and the Wal-Mart Distribution Center in Spring Valley.  AVC students toured Eakas in Peru and SuperValu in Oglesby.  Each group received information on the products, occupations and career ladders offered by each hosting company.  Career information, college programs at IVCC, what courses to be taking in high school, wage information and other local labor market information was also given to the students courteous of IVCC and BEST, Inc.
